Robert Marshall attempts to establish a sense of place, of intimate confrontation and investigation, and of private dialogue with the energy and patterns of our world. His abstract realism is a mixture of observation and visual ambiguities. “I feel a strong kinship with artists who maximize color and light and draw inspiration from intimate fragments in an attempt to amplify the whole,” Robert says. “I have a need to link paint, mark and gesture to natural phenomena.” Life’s purpose for him comes in glimpses which, although originally private, he is willing to share. His peaceful work quiets our souls and prompts us to gentle inquiry into life’s beauty – the work takes us home. Robert is a key faculty member in BYU’s visual art department. He has served as Chairman of the art department for 12 years and is director of study abroad programs in London and in Madrid. Marshall believes that as an artist and professor he can give back to humankind some of what he has been given.
