The land as a subject for Deborah Ebbers is a place imbued with childlike wonder. “Painting opens me,” she says, “again and again, to the ancient, changing tides of water, light, and weather, and the different crops which yield their bounty year after year. I marvel at the thick trunk of an old tree going from grey to luminous orange with the slow sinking of the sun, or at the vision of mathematical certainty that comes from the plowed rows of a field.” The land’s shifting moods reflect Deborah’s own inner world, yet remains constant in its ability to sustain her spirit, urging her to behold a larger view. In her painting, she is not separated from the sea of things that live, breathe, and die. She believes herself fortunate to appreciate the breath of a moment, to watch the clouds play and light brush the hillsides. Her work pays homage to this sacred relationship and reveals its beauty for us. Not one second is ever the same as the last, and painting the land captures the dynamic moment illuminated within her. The world is a constantly shifting symphony of elements and events, causes and effects. Deborah balances light and shadow and lets her inner orchestra play for us in layers of paint. She opens a door to the viewer’s own personal experience with nature.
