| Londoner Mick Dean loves the whole aspect of his ancient city. Particularly fascinating to his discerning eye is the attractive “nitty gritty” of Victorian London: the endless, graceful abstracts of cobbles and kerbstones. “The Victorians were wonderfully able people, who completely transformed Britain (not to mention the rest of the world) with the rush of their inventive technology steam, rail, industry, trade and all the paraphernalia thereof.” The work of their gifted engineers was attractive as well as functional. Alas, their London is now disappearing fast and Mick tries to capture the charm of their accents in his paintingswith curious juxtapositions of modern culture. Another core subject is erosionin the tidal River Thames and other parts of the extensive British coastline. Mick says, “As any traveler to our shores knows, we do not have climate in Englandonly weather! English weather is notoriously unpredictable and it rains a lot. Water has shaped our coastline, architecture, landscape, agriculture and lifestyle. His wife claims that part of this erosion fascination is because the same is happening to him! “Thus, I explore the nuances of water in our English environmentpuddles, tide washes and almost any watery expression that catches my eye.” Mick lives in London with his wife, dog and cat, and is, as he claims, “as happy as Larry.” |
