| Bruce Brainard uses landscape as a metaphor for fallen man and his quest for light, peace and meaning. His paintings explore the spiritual odyssey of the soul. His love of landscapes first began during his childhood in a small farming community nestled under the Tetons in the Snake River Valley of Idaho. This love was further intensified as a young man while working in the fields as he observed the landscape that surrounded him and pondered the meaning of life. Bruce believes as Picasso said, “The purpose of art is to express the great emotions.” He uses landscape to try and express the greatest emotions, which he believes are not necessarily loud, sentimental or profane but rather quiet, authentic, and sacred. As the 19th C German romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich said, “…a painter should paint not only what he sees before him, but also what he sees within himself.” Bruce’s work can be seen in numerous collections, and since his career has taken flight Bruce has been enjoying the pursuit of his “muse,” reflecting the quiet certitude of God and nature. |
